Navigating FS from within Nautilus extension

Hello all,
I tried to ask on IRC, but did not get any answer.
Is it somehow possible to navigate a file system in Nautilus from within a Nautilus extension? E.g. this is needed to implement some kind of a "Favorites" menu.
