How nautilus "calculates" filesizes

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature so I'll ask.
Nautilus doesn't calculate filesizes - it just reads them out from
anywhere. Let me make an example:
I'm downloading an ISO file that contains 700 MBs of data and I'll stop
the download after 30 percent. Now, Nautilus tells me that the filesize
is 700MB.
How do other Filemanagers/DEs/OS handle this? I know from good old
Windows (that I haven't used for a long time now) that it calculates all
filesizes everytime you open the "preferences" dialog. This might cost
CPU power but I think today we can do this as well due the fact that
nearly everybody has a CPU that is fast enough.

So is this a bug or a feature, and if it's a feature, please think about
it ;)

Cheers
