Heh. Perhaps a still-useful, but less surprising approach would be
to make double-clicking the desktop == open ~/Desktop in a file
manager window?
(Okay, so I guess nowadays it wouldn't necessarily be "~/Desktop" that
you opened, but $XDG_DESKTOP_DIR...)
