This sounds like a good solution.

Heh. Perhaps a still-useful, but less surprising approach would be to make double-clicking the desktop == open ~/Desktop in a file manager window? (I.e. make it a shortcut for Places->Desktop).
What if the first time the user doubleclicks on the desktop background we show a dialog saying:
------------------------------------------------
You have double clicked on desktop background, choose the action you want to be performed when this happens:
o Show the Desktop (minimize all opened windows)
o Open Desktop folder in a new window
[x] Do not show this dialog again
-------------------------------------------------
Advantages of this dialog are:
- We avoid the problem of people that double click unintentionally and gets surprised by their windows disappeared.
- Gives the user a way to learn the feature.
- Gives the user more choice on what action to execute.
