I 100% agree with you.
I think it's better to use scaling to represent the common sense of weight of a container like a folder.
I don't agree to use the option into the properties dialog to avoid growing of kde-style/windows too-much-options, but offering into gconf a capability to fine tuning.
Time-based classification must be made using timeline based interfaces and not size-weight solutions (size,colors...).
