One problem is that it should be the same modifier when using keyboard
navigation. For instance, I can use option-down on the mac to open a folder
and ctrl-option-down to open it and close the existing folder.
But GTK+ uses ctrl+arrows to move the focus:

But that bug is old and I haven't investigated the current state of things.
Maybe I was too fixated on using the up/down arrow to open folders (I have
this dream of making linux like my old Mac). Also I don't seem to have
mentioned the second modifer to distinguish between moving up/down in the
list and opening the parent/child folder.
