nobody will be confused or work more efficiently with another way.
Replies in this thread confirm that there are also people more
comfortable with the current design.
As nautilus has the ability to do it either way, and people seem to
have different ideas about how it should work, maybe we should focus
on making it very easy to configure. The viewing preferences dialog
needs a fair amount of love anyway...
eg. for discussion purposes, maybe something along the lines:
+------------------------------------------------------------------+
| |
| Change view properties for: fred.html |
| X All html files |
| |
| +----------------------+-----------+--------------+ |
| | Views | View menu | Default view | |
| +----------------------+-----------+--------------+ |
| | View as text | X | | |
| | View as html | X | X | |
| | Run application | X | | |
| | | | | |
| +----------------------+-----------+--------------+ |

| |
| +-----------+ |
| Detailed settings for filetypes and programs: | Configure | |
| +-----------+ |
| |
| |
|+------+ +------+ +-------+|
|| Help | | Quit | | Apply ||
|+------+ +------++-------+|

OK, this has some probs, like the 'view menu' column would be multiple
select whereas the default view is like a radio select, just trying to
foment some discussion with this.
The 'filetypes and programs' dialog needs some work as well. At first
glance it LOOKS like somewhere you can configure extra handlers for
mimetypes, took me quite a while to work out that it wasn't.
Cheers,
Long.
