perhaps not opening another window as in 'spring-loaded', but make the
folder icon grow the size of the nautilus window while fading the new
folder in. Basically, entering the folder in the same window, and
cueing the user so he knows it's happening.

Maybe automatically splitting the Nautilus window in two panes ? I don't
know if that would be usable but that would avoid the multiple windows.
