I had a similar problem a couple months ago--my problem had something to
do with the sound device. I had munged up some configuration, so normal
users no longer had access to my sound device. Normal non-root user's
would open a nautilus window ok, but as soon as you mouse-overed an
icon, it would stall. Changing the permissions on the sound device fixed
it. So, it technically wasn't Nautilus's fault, but Nautilus didn't
handle the misconfiguration gracefully.
