I hate that idea. The one great advantage of Unix is its single, unified
namespace, the filesystem. It already is a tree- all these things
descend from /.
Your proposal breaks this behaviour, and reorganises everything within
an entirely different tree for no good reason. Microsoft thought that
"My Computer" was a good idea. I think they were wrong. We don't need to
replicate MS's mistakes.
The desktop or a menu is the place for users "quick links".
