Sounds like you are on my wavelength. I had considered XBEL as the base
format, and a very simple CORBA interface to serve it to applications.
I'm sure it'd be fairly trivial to then hack the bookmarking code of the
various projects to make use of this interface.
This shouldn't affect those that wish to maintain their
application-specific bookmarks, just make it easier for people who
mix'n'match a bit. Personally, sometimes I'd prefer to open one of my
FTP mirror link in Galeon, other times in Nautilus (depends which
version is most stable at the time :)).
Applications wouldn't need to display bookmarks they are not capable of
viewing, which would take care of the issue of 'bookmark clutter'.
I know of at least one Gnome-based bookmark maintenance program
(http://gnobog.sf.net/) which could be used here.
I also appreciate that the developers of each application involved would
probably not be that interested in coding support for this. They would
just have to agree to the patch. Support for this could made optional at
compile-time.
Anyway, /me fears this I have veered off-topic a bit. This thread was
originally about a problem with the bookmarks sidebar tab.
