that worked, thank you Darin.

But then I needed a lot more new libs in order to compile
Nautilus-1.0.5. Download ... fix .spec files ... build ... install ...
and finally: 

rpm -tb /opt/Nautilus/nautilus-1.0.5.tar.gz 

unfortunately this stops at/after 
Merging translations into nautilus-help.desktop.

when I do a make in the BUILD directory I get
make[6]: *** No rule to make target `gnome-customization.xsl', needed by
`all-am'.  Stop.
make[6]: Leaving directory
`/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/nautilus-1.0.5/components/help/converters/gnome-db2html3/gnome-customization'

<sigh>

now I will try Havocs suggestion (gnomehide)
