Because of one of the *other* cool features of the Mac Finder, which is
that the size and layout of icons within a folder is preserved, so each
time you open it it's exactly as you left it when you closed it. It's
one of those things that you don't even notice until you've been using
a Mac for years and then switch, and wonder why the heck navigating your
file system has suddenly become so painful.
