I think there should be an option for this too.  Here I actually comment
out / remove the code in nautilus before every compile which has
anything to do with playing with my mounts.  

I make 
- cdrom's not appear on the desktop when they're mounted
- windows not come up when cdrom's are  mounted (I haven't found the
tool to change this behavior under debian although I believe there is an
option)
- cdrom's not get ejected on unmount.

I prefer a more GMC style of cdrom behavior where you have a static icon
on the desktop for your cdrom's and you mount / unmount them and then
access them from that icon which is always in the same position.  I
don't think there's anyway to access this behavior with nautilus without
changing the code.  (having the option to have the icons always there,
but to display a different icon depending on whether the drive is
mounted or not would be neat).
