If you want Nautilus to place icons on the desktop background, then Nautilus
draws the entire background. There is no way to have Nautilus put icons on
the desktop without drawing the entire desktop. But you can set a Nautilus
preference so it doesn't draw the desktop or desktop icons at all. To do
this, open the Preferences dialog, click on Windows & Desktop, and uncheck
"Use Nautilus to draw the desktop".
