Re: [Nautilus-list] Progress Bar on Move

Thanks for all your great suggestions.

I especially dig the
files-wander-across-my-desktop-along-a-casablanca-style-line
idea. Gnome XP material :)
I'm afraid it would be a monumental task to implement atm though.

I also like the idea of displaying progress in the status bar. It sounds
like it could work from an useability standpoint and cluttering the
desktop with progress dialogs is really a bit messy. But having multiple
operations in progress is more of an exception of my current
file-managing habits.
I wonder though how valid it is (from a theoretical standpoint) to
associate a file-operation with a certain window. Such an operation
usually involves a source and a target and not always is the source a
nautilus shell window. I always found it strange in mswindows that the
file progress dialog is a modal child of the explorer window which
started the operation. Why not - for the sake of argument - of the
target window?
You would still have to bring up a dialog if for example you're dealing
with a specialised instance of a nautilus window without statusbar
(read: desktop) as source.

I think I'll create a Bugzilla "Consider alternative ways of displaying
progress" bug and try to archive some of our ideas there.

Oh, and thanks Calum for the link to the UI Styleguide. This was exactly
the kind of data I was hoping for.
I'll go with the "blessed" 1 sec delay and prepare a patch over the
weekend to finally resolve 61517.
