How does task-assignment work in this project? Do I need somebody's
permission? Is there a place where I could read up on the rules?

I think I can firgure out the programming part, although I will probably
need somebody to take a look at my suggestions for implementing this. I
don't want to do a lot of work and then find out my patch violates the
architecture or similar.

I could use some help when it comes to the visual part. Can't do
graphics.
