You're not dumb.  The Files and Programs capplet that was distributed with
PR1 does nothing.  It's not currently functional.  The only way to add mime
types is to edit files in /usr/share/mime-info folder.

The sidebar loser, in my opinion, should not have been distributed with
PR1.  That was, IMO, a mistake.  Is is a component that, when the right
environment variables are set, will crash.  The point of this was to test
the integrity of Nautilus when a component crashes.
