Actually, it doesn't open the "Play Album" dialog, at least not all the
time. If you press space, the selected control will activate; you can
move the selection with <Tab>/<Ctrl-Tab>, <Shift-Tab>, clicking with the
mouse, or the arrow keys. This is true for all Gnome applications
(including media players); I guess the relevant HIG section is 10.1.2.1
(while it is about selection, which can be argued does not apply
completely here, it clearly associates left-click with space and double
left-click with return). The reasoning is probably to have a consistent
way of operating all applications - and especially their graphic
interface - with the keyboard, important for accessibility, ease of use,
and efficiency.

It's no doubt unfortunate that this key is already associated with a
different action in many other programs (play/pause instead of
activation); but I consider the consistency between applications on my
desktop worth it.
