Sorry to follow up to myself - the above should probably be an extension
to the following document:

Probably by specifying a scheme for generation of directory names based
on MIME-Type and/or metadata, e.g.

image/* goes in $XDG_DATA_HOME/Images
audio/* goes in $XDG_DATA_HOME/Music

I'll copy my thoughts to the maintainer of that ..
