It appears that git diff has a some new difference algorithm options that may be interesting to try out.

Meld could report a movement rather than one deletion (in file a) and one
addition (in file b).
I've wanted to try something like this for ages, but (a) it's hard and
(b) the UI would probably be a nightmare. Not saying it wouldn't be
useful, but it's a long way down the list.
