I moved the custom editor command parsing to preferences.py but have difficulty getting the current line in a way you describe. Hope that you can do it at some point.

As you can see (in the attached diff file) i used {file} and {line} as keywords.
As far as preferences dialog is concerned i agree with you - describing the possibility of really custom command line in the help file should be enough for now.
Although I am curious about how difficult it is to put some extented explanations about different settings as floating tips when you hover over controls or click on little ? images that could be positioned here and there...
