The way in which this would be supported is that we'd migrate from
Python's own file handling to using gio. This has been the plan for
age, but last time I looked at doing it the gio bindings in our
currently support version of pygobject didn't have enough coverage for
us to migrate. I haven't looked recently, but had assumed that this
would become possible with the one-day port to Gtk+ 3 and gobject
introspection.

Feel free to open a bug if you can't find one, but I do think that
there's already one around somewhere.
