I don't know it needs to be adjustable, but at the moment it's just
painted yellow with 50% alpha or something. I agree that we could
certainly do something better than that. Suggestions for how that
could be done in a way that will look good for all change block types
would be awesome.

Yes (Ctrl+Esc) but it's only in the most recently released version (1.5.2).

I'm not really willing to change that default. I'm sure there are
plenty of people like yourself who value the syntax highlighting, but
others (including myself) find it distracting to have syntax
highlighting and change highlighting at once... there's just too much
visual noise.
