spaces instead of tabs

I have a small feature request-- it would be handy if there were a checkbox in Preferences->Editor->Misc named "Use spaces instead of tabs". This would insert spaces when the tab key was pressed instead of a tab character. This is useful when working in a language like python, where the source code uses spaces instead of tabs.
What do you think? Would this be difficult / bad to implement?
