MC Version 4.8.26 can not load any skin

I have version 4.8.24 installed on ubuntu 20.04 via apt-get.

I have compiled version 4.8.26 via the default configure

When I start 4.8.26 I get an error message that
"Unable to load 'gray-green-purple256' skin." or whatever
skin has been configured earlier from 4.8.24.
If the ini file is deleted, than the error message indicates that
the default skin cannot be loaded.

I am including the version information from 4.8.26 and I also note the
error message that shows when 4.8.26 has been invoked and then exited:

Please advise. I have no objection to using 4.8.24 except that
Control-i doesn't work and I really like being able to use control-i
