Unable to compile on Xbuntu

Hello everyone,

Just setting up a Xbuntu 6.10, Its the only version I could get to install.
No mc, downloaded mc*tar but it won't compile.  From the configure.log:-
 
configure:2329: error: compiler cannot create executables
see compiler.log for more details
...
*OUTPUT VARIABLES*
there are several lines where "missing --run *** "
....
configure: exit 77

Sorry never done C programming, 

Any body able to supply a deb or otherwise help.
