I was the maintainer between versions 4.5.55 and 4.6.0, and there was
very little new code added at that time. In fact, I was mostly removing
or simplifying code.

I really doubt that 4.6.0 is noticeably slower that 4.5.55 if compiled
under the same conditions.

The newer/slower linux has ver. 4.6.0,
which has the nice facility of 'copying the selected fileID to
the command line, by <Ctrl-enter>'.

I now see that this facility works in VT-mode but not with X/KDE.
Do I need some setup in mc, or must I investigate KDE ?

Support for more terminals was indeed an exception, when some code was
added.

I would prefer that you stop mistrusting mc developers and use the
latest version. But it's your choice. You can spend days configuring
KDE as much as you want. Just make sure you are using an old version,
so that your results are useless for other users.

Also, do some users have success with 'undelete' ?
 And for which fs-types: ext2, ext3, reiser ?

Yes, only with ext2.
