Line drawing using wrong characters

I have MC running in
a console - so far so good.
The line drawing is
not using the right characters - it is using strange characters
(>chr(127)). I do I force it to use the right
characters/font?
In my shell, I have
LANG=en_US (so that the man pages would show the right characters).
What else can I do? (I'm using SecureCRT as the
client)
