Using the teach facility of mc I could not get the "completion/M-tab" to
work. Possibly this is X-related instead of mc-related. I just don't
know how to solve it. Does anyone else do?

Most window managers hijack the Alt-Tab combination for switching between
apps. Which window manager are you using? What happens if you press Alt-Tab
while having two active apps?

You will obtain the same result by pressing, in sequence, Esc then Tab.

A related problem, not MC-specific, is the hijacking of the Ctrl-Tab key by
KDE as a means to switch between workspaces. I redefined it using Alt-1 and
Alt-2 for going backward and forward through the workspaces, and now I can
use Ctrl-Tab to switch between tabs when in tabbed applications like Mozilla
and many editors.

To finish off with another off-topic tip, put the following line in the
keyboard section of your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file:

    Option "XKbOptions" "ctrl:nocaps"

and you will disable the pesky CapsLock key behavior, while reusing it as
another Ctrl key; that's what that key meant in the Sun keyboards of old, and
I find it very handy.

The same behavior is obtained out of X-Window, in the Debian distro, by
adding the following line to the /etc/console-tools/remap file:

s/keycode  58 = Caps_Lock/keycode  58 = Control/;
