mc 4.6.0: no root no mouse

I compiled 4.6.0 with gpm 1.20.
Now as user I have no mouse suport with mc, but I
can use the mouse on the console.
I see an error message on the top 2 lines of mc
on startup and get an entry in syslog:
/usr/local/sbin/gpm[21318]: Failed gpm connect
attempt by uid 1000 for vc /dev/tty0
As root everything is fine... Permissions on tty0
are set to 666.
Can anyone help me out here?
