I haven't noticed such slowdown, but then I've only tested on a mailbox
< 1MB. Which version of parse_date does that system use? Can you verify
that all 3 versions show this slowdown (just comment out the version(s)
you want to skip)?

I'll see if I can move the code concerning the current time out of
parse_date. Hope that speeds up things a little.
