Glib is very usable and it would be a pain in the ass to clean up
the code now of all 'glibisms', I reckon.

Your point of scarce resource systems does not appeal to me since 
the rescue system's idea is not full-blown linux system with all the goodies
you can have. Besides - glib is quite small, it's not the glib use that makes 
mc quite resource-demanding. It's a bunch of old, unused code that does.
