Even if you cannot chown you should be able to use the "move" command.
That's the problem that needs to be fixed. If you can reproduce it with
the latest version of mc please report it as a bug and give more
information.

You should use a script. MC is an interactive program. It's not the best
choice for the operations that take days to complete.
