GIO and gvfs will handle mass storage cameras just fine.

The gvfs GDU volume monitor should be adding the necessary x-content
types to cameras (eg. the ones that have DCIM folders in the root).
If a specific memory card or camera doesn't get tagged as such, send the
output of "gvfs-tree" and "gvfs-mount -li" in a bug report.
