Off the top of my head, this sounds like a problem with gnome-print,
possibly with the font map.
Do you have a "fontmap" file in /usr/share/fonts? (Or in
PREFIX/share/fonts, if PREFIX != /usr.)
Does gnumeric work for you? Does it offer you the usual fonts
(Helvetica, Courier, etc.)
