Ok then, I guess one question we might want to answer before choosing a
winner is whether we want the colour of the logo to be part of the
GUADEC "brand" at all, or just the shape.  Most commercial logos rely on
both (and provide guidelines about how to use monochrome versions etc.),
because it makes them more instantly recognisable.

Right, and (IMHO) that version doesn't look nearly as good-- so if I
knew we'd have to use it like that in some circumstances, I'd be less
inclined to choose it as the winner.

I agree that the version that I used does not look very good.  I was in a hurry to get a temporary theme up.  I'm actually considering using a dark blue horizontal header above the navigation.  The navigation colors can be changed very easily as well.

The idea was mainly the yellow stars (EU) around the gnome logo... There can be many variations of the logo... 1) with/without borders, 2) color/without color, 3) partial coloring.  Of course, with much more attention to detail and polish.  I think my submission shows the potential of the logo when used with a dark background.

Given that I've been already "awarded" the theme portion of the competition, I don't mind if the other contestant was awarded the prize.  I like the other logo and I can see the artist has put many hours and attention into his work.  However, personally, I like my logo, so naturally I'd like it to be used.  :) Perhaps, we can work together to come up with a better version.  I think it would be great to meet the other artist and the rest of the guadec team so we can collaborate in future projects as well. :)

John Hwang (tavon)

It's cool to see that both the winning artists have considered this,
though.

Cheeri,
