If you install MinGW-get it'll ask you to install the compiler, but you can decline and just select the msys component. If you just install msys and put the tools in your path, things might just work.

If you are using git to get your sources, then the question is are you using msysgit? If so, you already have msys installed.

I'm probably giving the impression that I'm vehemently against installing Cygwin etc but ultimately, I'm not.  If it has to be done, it has to be done.  It's just that there's something "not right" about needing to install one compiler, just to make some other compiler work (if you understand what I mean!)

MSYS is definitely something I'd look into but whenever I read anything about it, it seems to be inherently tied to MinGW (i.e. you can't have one without installing the other - which kinda takes me back to square one!)

Do you happen to know if there's a standalone version of MSYS available for Windows?
