Message Area

I need to send multiple lines of different lengths of user information 
to a message area in the bottom quarter of a gtkmm window. As I 
understand it, the EventBox is only one clipped line, opens a separate 
window, and requires a user response.

I want my application to post messages to the "message area" when needed 
without user response. How can I implement this?
