its probably related to a bug in the expose handling in libgnomecanvas i
in newer versions. the bug is 100% visible on gtk/osx where drawing is
done differently than under X Window, but i have always wondered whether
or not it could show up under X.

i have a fix for gtk/osx but i have not yet checked it out on X.
