gtkmm checkout : git failure

I am trying to check out the version of gtkmm from the gnome svn repository using jhbuild.

$ jhbuild sanitycheck 
Could not check git program
$ git clone
mkdir: cannot create directory `':No such file or directory
* git clone [-l] [-q] [-u <upload-pack>] <repo> <dir>
$ rpm -q git
git-0.99.4-1.1.el3.rf

[so i can see it installed ] 
I have correctly modified the .jhbuildrc 
when i say 
$ jhbuild update gtkmm

the svn repo ones checkout fine but the git ones fail (for ex fontconfig).
Any one else face similar problems ..
