Problem with the custom widget example

Hello,
i tried the custom widget example in the gtkmm doc. When i comment out the background call the widget turns totally black. Is there a way to avoid this and set it to the standard background that all other widgets use?
Would it be better to derive from DrawingArea, if you want to draw some lines and react to the mouse click event?
I'm using gtkmm 2.9.8 and gtk 2.10
