gnome-vfs provides an imlementation for sockets, amongst other things. It is
a library for abstracting file systems, so I suspect it is not what you have
in mind as it is aimed at protocol independence. However, you might want to
have a look at it. It is wrapped (gnome-vfsmm) and you could probably find
out more on the gnomemm mailing list.
