i didn't want to declare it useless. but what i gather from havoc is
that almost no-one in the core GNOME team of developers is really
paying much attention to the GnomeCanvas at this time, that there is
an alternative canvas that people *are* using, and the existing
GnomeCanvas is buggy in new ways caused by the use GtkCanvasShape.

thats not useless, but it is a pretty dubious situation for a widget
that i'd like to recommend to many others.
