The problem isn't on your system; it's with the flags applied in the
makefile.
I'll try to check in a fix for this soon.

You can use "make -C <subdir>" to build specific subdirectories and
avoid the "examples" one. Alternatively, you can just use "make -k" and
ignore the errors.
