I wish to acknowledge that Lars-Peter Clausen has done most of the work 
in shifting from GdkPixmaps to Cairo Surfaces. Thanks for all the hard work.

My proposal is to merge master to the GTK2 branch and then merge 
cairo-alpha branch to master.

In this manner GTK2 is supported in its own branch and GTK3 in master.

Are you comfortable with this idea ? Any other ideas ?
