No, it's not needed.  I'd just like to avoid putting in code that 
potentially breaks an otherwise working build for some people.  But 
since, as you note, the whole test library compilation currently relies 
on gcc anyway, this does not apply here.

So I committed your patch, without the OPTIMIZE stuff, and with a few 
small changes.  Can you check that I haven't botched anything?

Looks good, and all tests passes.
