Further investigation into a few other errors have revealed that
either the FreeBSD port or the older versions were very forgiving
where they really shouldn't have been - at one point
Gtk2::ListStore->get(undef, 0) _works_ (ie doesn't die or trigger an
error - it returned undef), even though it doesn't make any sense
whatsoever.
At least now I'll learn the 'proper' way of doing these things :)
