So, Michael, what version of perl are you using?
Francesco Zucca reported the same problem off list. He sees the error
with perl 5.8.6 on Slackware 10.2 but *not* with perl 5.8.8 on Slackware
12.0. I can't find anything that looks related in perl's Changes file.
