you can use the pulse method on a progress bar. See the gtk2-perl pods (man Gtk2::ProgressBar or http://gtk2-perl.sourceforge.net/doc/pod/Gtk2/ProgressBar.html) or the gtk+ api reference (http://developer.gnome.org/doc/API/2.0/gtk/GtkProgressBar.htm) for more detail.
